Wing Study

The morning was filled with brilliant light, hearkening to an impending Spring-time. The warm temperatures made me wistful for the coming months. I felt like a young calf wanting to kick up it's heels after being penned inside the barn for the entire winter.

It seemed like a fitting time to play a bit with watercolor on hot-press. A lighter weight paper, with a bit more vellum cotton in feel, proved a playful surface to begin my series of wing themed artwork. I see that I need to study the actual forms a bit more in order to make this believable and not just an abstract shape. My super fine tip pen added some light stippling off the edges, and a white china marker was used on the surface of the lovely Prussian blue areas, to add the feather-like dimensions.

Valentines Steampunk style

Finished and delivered my cards for DS Watkins First Thursday Art Walk. These images give somewhat of an idea how they came out.
I was going for a steampunk-ish look. There are 4 different sets, 3 of which are all mounted on ca 1900 photo album pages, the envelopes (not pictured) are made from an 1896 player piano scroll. All pretty much period appropriate for the steampunk "era". The other set are the simple white ones with a heart mounted in the window.
This was a fun diversion. Travel this weekend and back to bookarts next week.

with an "I love you" note in front of two
printmaking paper cards for inscribing

I tediously pried the old black picture corner
things and used them to mount the envelope.
Fussy but you just don't see them like that
anymore and seemed appropriate.

These were my favorites. Fun AND easy. Same photo album paper, folded into a long tall shadowbox card. Each labeled accordingly, (Burning For You, Totally Into You, Totally Wrapped-Up In You, Totally Bound To You)
For these I used the piano scroll paper for the message box as well.

These were totally simple. Cut out copper hearts from patina'd sheet copper.
Attached with a glue dot to store bought cards.

There are three of another kind (not pictured) more in keeping with the ones up top, but are wearable heart pendants.

I seem to be fixated on whales. I drew this by using my new Micron artists pen. I'm so taken with this concept, I can't wait to get home and really work on it.

"I got sick of doing EDM sketches"

Ok, so I thought sketching those Everyday Matters challenges would be . . . challenging. They were. But only because because I began feeling restricted in what I wanted to sketch on any given day, or to put it another way: b o r i n g.

I mean when it got to "draw a piece of clothing," all I could think of was a simple-lined t-shirt. And why, I mean really, would I want to draw a piece of clothing. Though Danny Gregory was the inspiration for the list, I don't think he had anything to do with putting it together. That was left to Karen, Patty, Helen, Susan, and other ... people.

So I went back to my old ways. Heading out to find a place, a thing, a person, or an event to sketch. A place to get away in one's head to something a little more interesting than grocery store lists, shampooing carpets, shoveling snow, etc.

I like sketching. I like it a lot. It freshens my head from a good portion of the extraneous effluvia that floats about each day.

So here ya go:

Small landscape study

This small landscape study was my student's focus lesson for today. The primary objective was to create strong and dynamic clouds. Onto a very wet page, the dark prussian blue color was laid down first, with a touch of cobalt in the upper right corner. The paper was held upright, allowing the paint to streak down into the white space. Then the tool of the day - a crumpled, dry paper towel - was applied with very firm pressure against the paper's surface, blotting up the paint. Suddenly the white of the paper emerged. The hills and trees were added last. It was a quick little lesson and we all had a great deal of fun "playing" with the landscape. [I must put a disclaimer here that this was not an original design. I borrowed it from another online artist.]

Today is my last day on the coast. I hope it won't be to terribly long before we visit again.

I managed to find time to expand my whale concept before losing reception. I really feel this drawing could be transferred into a painting which I then could make prints out of. One of my goals this year is to get my etsy shop up and running again! This might be just the thing to do it too.

A Fearful Night

Though not as parodied as da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the popular "Starry Starry Night" by artist Vincent Van Gogh is a close second. There is something about the turbulence of the skies, and movement of the giant cypress trees that evokes a sense of unsettledness, which draws us in. I understand he was trying to represent the motion of the wind and the glittery nature of the stars in this famous nighttime painting.

I chose to use this artwork as a model, in my interpretation of one fearful night in a region quite like our own--with arborvitaes and basalt cliffs. It is the first of a 3-part series for a friend that follows a familiar Bible Psalm--taking the viewer from this fearful yet hopeful location to a place of calm waters and then finally to a glorious place of renewal.

Finally home

I'm finally home from the trip to Tennessee, the laundry is done, and the husband is off to Tuscon. I managed to finish one of my moon phase socks, or sun and moon, I can't decide what to call them and started the toe of sock number 2. If I'm diligent it will be done in a couple of weeks. But that means I have to be diligent. :)

I worked on a journal page last night and today made a fabric bowl from bits left over from other projects.

Beach (Trailer) House

The beautiful rugged coastline of Oregon has always been a special retreat for my family. We're lucky enough to have a Bosserman beach house (double wide trailer, no snobbery here!) to escape to. Just now I'm within cell range, and I'm taking advantage of it! Here is a small concept for an art print. A whale of friend.

my newest challenge

I've been busily working on a new project - ALAW (a letter a week). This project is a year long project at the end of which I'll have created two alphabets. The "rules" are simple: any medium, any style, size must be 7cm (3") square and after the letters have been created, they should be presentation ready in some form - a book, framed, hanging by wire, etc. One of the two alphabets must follow the theme "dotty". My subconscious has been working overtime to come up with how I wanted to create them, what style/shape of letters and ultimately how to present it.... Here's my first 4 letters for each week in January.

Obviously, I've decided to do my 'dotty' alpha first. I created dots of spattered watercolor as the background and the colors will progress through the color wheel three times. The tiles will also be connected with the ribbon of circles on black (more dots) and then filled in with zentangle patterns. I figured this way I'm practicing my lettering as well as my tangles!

Old Hotel Window

This is a before and after shot as well. I got this far with it before the new year. Then Over the weekend I finished it off, getting more highlights and adding some ivy sort of stuff. I call this "Old Hotel Window" 18 x 24 Acrylic, (she and the lantern glows in the dark) and what this is is a mock up of a large scale one in 2 pieces that I did for the Old Hotel Gallery in Othello. They finally got that piece just before Christmas, don't know if they installed yet but hey cool :)

Mystery Cave, Finished

Well a week back or so I should one that was a Cave of Mystery. Here I have the Old one, from last year and how I finished it over the weekend. It is 16 x 20 Acrylic. Total experimental. I started out real wet and daubbed paint off it with a paper towel. Then let it dry, added more runny paint, daubbing that out. Then some cave looking things letting the paint drip down. Now what I did to finish was just take brush and strengthen the stalags, leaving the middle untouched. There was no forethought or drawing or an idea of what was going to look like, It sort of looks like a figure or two. So "Cave of Mystery 1" is done.

Crazy in Love

This is what the letter blocks look like locked into the chase. It reads "Crazy In Love" reading right to left. It is like a puzzle to set up the wood slats called furniture just so and then to get every thing in there so tight nothing wiggles or falls out. Quite satisfying. Then like a nut I didn't take a photo of the card after printing. Oh well...I'll post that tomorrow. This is one more card for the Valentine Art Card Show at the DS Watkins Studio for February 1st Thursday.

Long Shadows

"In the bleak mid-winter, the snow lay on the ground." A favorite stanza from a Christmas carol comes to mind as I peered out the window yesterday morning to this most beautiful sight. I love it when the sunlight streams through the neighbor's arborvitaes and onto the glistening snow covered lawn. Hard to capture, but I've made an attempt here in oils for a quick "sketch."

I'm working with and in love with this 1968 Popular Mechanic Encyclopedia (PME) set. What a fabulous bit of work, history, usefulness and plenty of what would now be potential personal injury and class action suits waiting to happen. Plus bringing up old woulds of being a girl with shop-class inclinations at a time when it wasn't available for girls.
Looking for the "right" image in the "right" location for a bookart idea (in the PME) hasn't come yet but led me a merry chase online learning hand signals for scuba divers and research into William Morris designs.
In book 16, VA-ZO -There is a Weed Killers article introducing new chemicals and hope for "embattled homeowners and farmers" followed by (for you over 40 or 50 crowd,) a Euell Gibbons Wild Foods article. Love the juxtaposition. That sent me online to see if any of those herbicides and pesticides have since been banned. I still don't know. What I learned was too depressing to continue.
Thank goodness there is a wonderful William Morris rabbit hole to get lost in...

A Divergent Path

My sketch crawl paintings didn't get done because a sick headache took over my life yesterday. I did take some photos, so hope to get those sketched or painted soon.

This is a very strange painting from a few days ago, and I really have no idea what compelled me to paint it. I was thinking about this kid who used to sit behind me in 1st grade, he was missing an eye. Whenever the teacher would leave the room he would pull on my shirt sleeve until I would turn around and then he'd open his eye socket up wide so I would look into it. Kind of a creepy kid, wouldn't you say? I don't know why I kept letting him get away with this behavior, or why the teacher wouldn't move me to another spot. Today I've thought of all sorts of things I would say (or scream) to him about how it just wasn't appropriate. Yes it's a bit of a different painting for me, but this is a group I trust this sort of stuff with, so there you go. I've always thought art was a healing tool, so perhaps this is healing some little part of me that was left in the past.

Hello. This is weird. I think I will give up on the ballerina. I started her on the rough side of a piece of masonite but think since the 70's are over that I should have used the smooth side. I started a painting of Fredrick Douglass, a personal hero of mine, but I screwed that up too. Zero for 2, not bad. One pic is of a tea pot that I am working on. Since the weather is the way it is and I don't heat my studio, the construction is slow and that is OK for clay. The slower the better. I am working on some sinks for a nursery in Fresno Ca. and these are the first 2 attempts. The other pic was of some squish bottom mugs and bowls I bisqued yesterday.

"34th World Wide Sketchcrawl Held in the TriCities"

The "509 Urban Sketchers & Painters" (click) were pretty much skunked by the weather for the World Wide Sketchcrawl this last Saturday. Turns out we had freezing rain the night before and decided to cancel the outing. Then we decided while home on Saturday to sketch whatever we wanted while at home.

Then, as luck and Murphy's Law will predict, much of the ice was melted off the roads by 10am. Dave called Jim and they met at the Food Mart at the Mall to see if anything of the day could be salvaged.

The "World Wide Sketchcrawl" (click) orginated a few years ago in San Francisco and has gone globally viral. Click the link to see a listing of cities and places throughout the world who participate.

We first participated, as a TriCity group, one year ago today, on Jan 22, 2010, and we thought it was a great success. The WWSk is held every four months, and we plan on keeping on keep on with it.

Steampunk Blimp in Portland

I am currently writing this blog post on my mothers iPhone. Since I'm traveling through Oregon (Portland and the coast) my blog posts will be as dependable as Big Foot sightings. Hopefully devoted, but won't always show up. While on route from Dallas to Seattle to Portland I could not help but be in awe of the miracle of flight. Last summer while in Paris France I had the honor of seeing the Wright Brother's plane propeller. Since then the magic/science of flight has astounded me. So, while hurling 33,000 above the earths surface I drew this Steampunk version of a flying machine/blimp.

Art has happened nearly every day - posting has not. Reminds me of my vegetable gardening - love to grow 'em, then put off the harvesting 'til "tomorrow". Luckily, the art doesn't turn to cardboard like the green beans do.

Anyway, Orchid #2 is finished for the tryptich - Cattleya, Florist's Orchid.

I didn't officially participate in the World-wide Sketch Crawl, but maybe I'm dipping my toes in the water for the next one.
This started out as a pencil sketch, then colored with watercolor. It seemed a little ho-hum until the black fine-point Sharpie came out and dressed up the lines.

TerraWild

Helped Heather revamp and revive her nature blog, TerraWild. It involved finding the right layout, creating a better header, finding and editing pics, and working up some text to go with it. It was good practice using some Adobe software. I am finding Fireworks to be easier than Photoshop.

BTW: the most recent entry for the blog might be something some people on here would find interesting - a bunch of brush sets for Photoshop (leaves, flowers, wood texture, trees, animals, etc.).

As previously stated, today was the "34th World Wide Sketchcrawl," a day where artists from all over the world gather together to record the places, events, people and things of the world, then share them online.

Because the weather was so miserable last night with freezing rain falling, we decided to cancel our scheduled outing. Then, as Murphy's Law would predict, we had a warm wind that took most of the danger off that layer of ice by noon. That's when LaPoynte called me and said he was at the Food Court in the mall: a destination we had originally outlined for 1-3 this afternoon.

I drove down to meet and after a nice Italian sandwich, created by the staff at Bruchi's, Dave and I decided to drive downtown Kennewick to look for greater levels of inspiration.

This water decanter sits just inside the window at the Kennewick Coffee Company where, along side a 16oz. vanilla latte, I decided it was going to be mine to capture. We had a good time while there, talking to Ron Weed, a man who has been to Oaxaca, and back.

4. Randomly running bits and pieces of leftover copper and silver wire through the rolling mill to be soldered onto a blank to make an abstract pendant (waste not, want not!)
5. Workspace organization (one station for soldering, one station for metal clay work, one station for metal cutting and grinding and...)

Hearts and more hearts

Got caught up with hearts again today. I was just going to cut out a few and they seem to take off on their own accord. The big ones are about 1 1/2" wide.
Lots of fun and will find a way to attach them to cards for DS Watkins First Thursday but I have that nagging -didn't get anything done- feeling. Too many projects in-process, I guess. S'pect I best see some completions this coming week.

"EDM #21: Draw Something Old, Antique, or Vintage"

Since the challenge today was to draw something "old, antique, or vintage," I should have done a self-portrait as I was born on this day in 1946. You do the math, I find it too depressing..:-)

I chose to sketch this doll that my wife has had for a long time. It was her grandmother's cousin who stored it in a flour barrel when she moved west with her family in a covered wagon, we think sometime early 1900's.

The doll is a pre-Civil War doll though, so it is definitely, "old." Actually, a few years older than me.

Today was also the "34th World Wide Sketchcrawl Day" where drawers and sketchers all over the world sketched, in spirit, together. Since the weather sort of messed up our outing, I'm going to count this as one my "WWSketchcrawl sketches."

Art ALL Day

So the International Sketchcrawl was today but the snow and icy roads caused us to cancel drawing as a group. Some of us went ahead and drew from home, rooms, lunch, etc., and I hope to see some of them here. I have been housebound for DAYS and have been drawing a lot but getting pretty discouraged that I'm not ending up with anything worthy of rejoicing over. I would think after all this drawing, there would be SOMETHING! This is my lunch - or a part of my lunch...

Snowbound painting, and insight about painting edges

And some wisdom from Montana artist Carolyn Anderson (http://carolynanderson.com), who creates expressive, loose, impressionistic oil painting with great economy of stroke. She has a lot to say about impressionism, edges, and the craft of painting:

"Realist painting comes with its own set of parameters and craft can certainly be one of them. But I have yet to agree that craft alone will make a great painting. Craft without creativity is only part of the equation. When we make judgments about what is acceptable, or not, what is good, or not, and what “realism” is, or is not, we end up narrowing the possibilities of what our paintings can be. Painting is about learning to see - and hopefully, sharing how we see and what is visually important to us with others. We share a responsibility to interpret, not to try and re-create. We need to be open to the adventure of exploring, visual information. If we accept that what we paint can never be “real”, then we should be able to take our “reality” and see it in new and interesting ways.

[And regarding edges of things] In painting edges are the transition between shapes, values, and color. They help to define or diminish form. Used creatively, edges in painting are areas of translation – allowing one area to become another. Everything is connected to everything else. A favorite book states, “how the pieces are connected to each other is at least as important as what the pieces are." As an artist, you question the reality of what you are seeing. Instead of going in and drawing that shape as an outline, you draw where you see an edge. A lot of people are taught to start with the outline. I'm saying that the outline is not a reality. You start with what catches your eye, which has a lot to do with the quality of the light."

Speaking of Book Art

This is something I did some time back. The book was an old text of some kind, unimportant, and the image on the left is of a guy named BB Burritt. Can't remember what he was known for, something important and world changing I'm sure. And if you recognize the guy on the right, well, that's good; and if you don't, well...it's the best I could do at the time.

Picnik is Dead, Portland OR is Weird

Okay, there are two things on my mind at the moment.

The first is this, Google is shutting down my FAVORITE photo editing site called picnik. I use this free service EVERY DAY for my art and blog. I have used picnik for many, years and I can't believe this is happening! Powers that be at Google, you horrible little men.. You're on my bad list. Aside from picnik they are shutting down Needlebase, Social Graph API, Urchin and Google Sky Map. I'm honestly worried about what to do when picnik is gone. Any good photo editing sites you know of, please comment.

So aside from that disaster, I do have good news!

Tomorrow I'm boarding a plane destined for Portland Oregon. I was born there and still have friends to visit and of course family to see. Below is a rather romanticized version of my trip.

While on vacation I'll try my hardest to post everyday, but I will be out of reach for 3 days on the Oregon Coast. Unfortunately there is no reliable Internet connection, barbaric I know! ^_^

Bookmaking (trying) on photoshop

Gadzooks, spending hours trying to figure out how to get 8 1/2" x 11" book pages converted to 2" x 3" size. Without a letterpress or bookmaking program its trial and error grunt work thus far. Getting it to print the pages front to back in properly aligned and in proper order will be tricksy. Know of any free bookmaking downloads that will work on my PC?

A spot of realism, and some D-R-A-W-ing wisdom

While prepping last month for the watercolor class I teach at the Cancer Center, I did a still life from a photo then decided the project was a bit advanced for my beginners, many of whom have dexterity issues from some of their treatments. Today, having added a few finishing strokes of soft reflected light on the papayas, I thought it might be nice to share this bit of realism, which I'm thrilled to discover I still can do.

On another note, I'm reading a book called "Learn Watercolor the Edgar Whitney Way," a distinguished artist, who in his day trained many of our current masters. He discusses the value of drawing, which I thought was relevant, since we've got so many diligent sketchers here...

    "In his last class at the Pratt Institute where he had taught for so many years, high on the front wall of the classroom, as large as he possibly could, he wrote the word D R A W. Ten minutes ten times a day is better than six hours once a week. Great draftsmen were eliminators, putting down only essentials, and this skill can be learned with a sketchbook because the limited time teaches you what is important and what isn't. You have to discipline yourself until drawing everywhere and at all times becomes a habit.
     Remember when you're sketching, you're not after results. The drawing is not important--the experience is. Your emotion and your degree of understanding leak through the pencil or brush onto the paper as you make your stroke."

My art-a-day is all over the place again this year - want to try my hand at so many things. As a result of an online class w/ Traci Bautista, I made a couple mixed media pieces: acrylic, spritzed watercolor paint, stencils, stamps, oil pastels, markers, bic white out pen and even a bingo marker! If you're interested, I posted some of the interim steps on my blog - click here.

Traci advocates having a second (in my case a third too) piece of paper to clean stencils and brushes on so you create multiple things at once and no paint/ink goes to waste. I started with a 12x12 canvas and ended up with the 2 watercolor papers filled as well. There were certainly stages in each that I hated what I was doing and despaired of a result I would like, but I kept moving forward. While I don't LOVE any of them, I learned a lot and have many ideas floating about on how to apply the techniques differently next time.....

Butterfly project

I came across this today and thought there might be an artist or two here that would like to participate:

"The Holocaust Museum in Houston is doing an amazing thing. They have set up a goal to collect 1.5 million handmade butterflies (in any form, painting, collage, sketch etc.) from around the world by December 31st, 2012. Each butterfly represents one of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. In the Spring of 2014 an exhibit will be installed in the museum to serve as a memory of the children. They chose butterflies because of the following poem.

Since Lapoynte showed his sketch page that had lots of robots on it, I thought you'd like to see a few pieces I started many years ago but could never finish them off. One of the 3 robots was started like 6 years ago. Acrylic on Artboard (sort of masonite board painted with shiny white paint) Then the one with all the Desert Droids in front of Jump-Off-Joe I started maybe 20 years ago in oil. then reworked and reworked, and maybe used that Genesis synthetic oil, then can't remember if I put acrylic on top of that years later. Both pieces I sort of lost what I was going for. Haven't worked on either one for years, but thought they'd be cool Robot pieces.

Art-a-Day . . . What a great plan for the month of January! I'm in!

Then life happened and we were called away to Florabama to bid farewell to a man who had dedicated 80 years of his life to painting . . . Art-a-Day happened, but not in the sense I had planned.

Back home in the studio the paint has been flowing. I finished the Jersey Cow that had been waiting patiently while I packed up another's brushes. Then I moved on to images captured while in the South . . .

A snowy day, Warm up paintings, Tweeking

The nest is taking form here in my home studio, at least I have uncovered the paint tubes so I can paint with fresh color. I'm standing at the drafting table, with reflected light off snow easing it's way in through the north facing windows (at least it was yesterday ... didn't get this posted then). Darn it, but the colors are way too intense on the orange mandarin and the greens. I chose not to paint the red wall behind it, and today I realized that's why my colors were so intense there. We continue to learn when we aren't even near the brushes. ;-) Anyway I stylized the images in Photoshop because I liked Michael Rastovich's postings so much...this is an attempt towards that level of effortlessness: "Olive and Mandarin, after Rastovich"

I enjoyed a diversion from current projects though hesitate to post this picture. What they might become in my head is so much cooler than this looks (or fear they won't come out like I imagine?) . C'est la vie. I haven't worked with copper and brass for a long time. Love, love the colors copper can express.

Sleeping in a Floaty-Soft-Place

Here's what I'm thinking.

All of my literary and artistic heroes were early risers and know for working hard all day. I've found that I don't work like that. All my best painting is late at night, I can't stand painting in the "wee morning hours".

Today I tried to imitate Hemingway's vigorous work routine by painting this morning.

It was torture!! I just can't focus, I need to be alone when I paint. Mornings are filled with people running out for work, or hanging out half the day, or lawn guys firing up leaf blowers. Afternoons here are filed with the "lovely" voices of children shrieking in what I can only guess is an epic game of tag. By dinner time my family is back, and it's not until everyone has gone to bed that I feel able to paint, and paint I do.

I guess what I'm saying is that every creative person has their own schedule, a "magic" time of the day. My time is from 9-11 at night roughly. Anyways, this is what I've accomplished tonight.

Not much, but I'll paint more after uploading this. My biggest fear is to lose track of time and forget to post everyday! Thank God it hasn't happened yet! ^_^

doodle or tangle

Whether doodling or purposeful tangling (as Zentangles call it), that's what I did the last couple days.

I used my inktense pencils to add the purple then wet the color. The results are okay....more that I enjoyed the randomness of the patterns. Since my office was closed today in anticipation of the storm in Seattle, I did work more on a mixed media project I started so I'll post pics of that tomorrow.

I am so impressed with everyone's efforts and the range of styles and projects presented. Beautiful Valentine cards, Greg's otherworldly paintings, Jim's fab sketches, Sarah's lovely lady. My oh my...I'm in awe.

On the road

I've been in Tennessee since Sunday and just getting around to posting. However I have been making art most of those days.

These images are from the road trip on the way. Beautiful sunset and ice on the rocks along the way. The trip made me realize how much I miss seeing mountains. It's also been an interesting couple of days with cold weather, then warm weather, tornado warnings and thunderstorms, and now back to freezing temps. Of course those of you in Washington are dealing with your own weather extremes right now.

These two sketches are of the same tree outside the hotel window that I did on consecutive days. You'll have to trust me that it's the same tree. :)

The Blue Dreamcatcher

Well slowly am getting things accomplished, art wise. Didn't paint Saturday at all, though I intended to. But worked on this painting Friday Sunday Monday and Tuesday. I started working on the outside bricks for the window. About half done. Plus I added some planets in the sky. The black x in the middle is just charcoal to mark center of the painting, will not be in finished one.

"EDM #18: Draw What You See From Your Window"

I hate snow.

This morning we have 4" and it continues to pile up. We just shampooed our carpets and polished our hard wood floors this past week; and the grandkids are coming over to day so they can go sledding on the hill. And you know this means a good deal of melted snow, and accompanying mud, will be... We have extra precautions at the door, lots of ruggery. (Is that a word?)

I don't like trying to draw, sketch, or paint snow either. It's just too damned hard to capture. So I look out my living room window and see the mailboxes across the street. Poor things, they are cold, wet, and covered in that blasted white stuff. My commitment, my commitment - everyday a sketch. Ok, I'll sketch them in my EDM sketchbook, at #18, and they'll enter the fray where it is warm, and comfortable.

I hate snow.

I so hoped to have pictures here today. I put finishing touches to two (of 4 pieces in a series titled BA-BR) then got hung up on the third (main) piece. It's packaged up to take to RFP Plastics tomorrow to see why the black plexiglas isn't adhering to the clear. It's a delicate last step and getting very buggered up. :-(
Had all gone according to plan (does that ever really happen?) I'd have finished them AND spent time playing with Hearts for DS Watkins February Art Walk Valentines AND had pictures of the works. Tomorrow....

Taste The Rainbow

Today I was determined to make progress and have something worth sharing. Next week I'll be traveling so expect lots of "Post-It-Note" art and quick sketches.

Until then though, here's what I'm working on.

The Josie painting, as I've dubbed it, is coming along really well.

Basically, i paint with whatever color happens to be closest to me. Lazy, yes, but also effective in adding interest.

While I painted today I listened

to Wolfmother (think 21st century Van Halen... but better).

Something about crazy 70's inspired rock keeps my painting lose and instinctual. All my best art has been assisted by some form of music.

Whenever painting, I tend to "nest" as seen below.

"EDM #17: Draw a Musical Instrument"

Two of my loves, of many, from my childhood/early adolescent period were my steel guitar and the mechanical drawing classes I took in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.

The steel guitar lessons were taken in the panhandle of Texas. Steel guitars were a big deal down there. Still are. But when we moved to Washington state, the lessons stopped. Of course at the time, I didn't really care too much one way or the other. I was tired of always being harangued to "go practise your guitar, Jim." I didn't see much need for it. Each week when the teacher played the new lesson/song for us, I had it. Could play it by ear. I never learned much the difference between a sixteenth note and a whole note, but I did learn enough about fractions that it came in real handy once I got to sixth grade.

My good buddy, Harold Bradley, and I used to play our guitars at school assemblies in Texas. Once I got to Washington state no one ever knew I could play one of these things. Odd isn't it, how things change, evolve and turn out.

Anyway, I tried to blend these two so very fond memories in this sketch. Obviously I've lost about as much technical details on mechanical drawing as I have that old guitar. Oh, and by the way, I still have it.

I'm also posting a page from my sketchbook that is a bit relevant. Today I added the dove, which holds a message of peace. I love the movement of birds wings, especially the white dove. The feathers are almost translucent--a sharp contrast to the softness of the sky. My little dove has a halo, as I felt he took on a saintly quality. "Dream a little dream, and Love to all."

I'm not especially sure why I fill up blank spots on sketchbook pages that are already in progress as with this apple study, and intensity scale that I painted a few months ago. Doesn't everyone have a multitude of sketchbooks, only to work in the one closest at hand when the creative impulse strikes ... or do they fill up one book and then go to the next? No matter how disciplined I try to be, I seem to be the more random artist.

First ever portrait from a live model

So after about 15 years' worth of New Year's Resolutions about starting drawing again or even taking some formal lessons again for inspiration, I finally did it. After spending this Christmas drawing with my Dad back in the UK, I signed up for a portrait drawing class at Chicago's wonderful 'Palette & Chisel' Academy. I've never drawn from a live model before. Except the pen and ink sketch of my sister that I did on Boxing Day Evening. Which isn't quite the same..!

I've drawn from loads of photos of people, and drawn my own hands and feet more times than I can remember - but I've always felt more comfortable drawing 'things' and 'stuff' rather than people. Today reminded me why. Although I think it looks like a the woman who posed, it's not a great 'likeness' of the woman. Ironically I think I got a better likeness of my sister with the quick sketch. Probably as I've looked at her for 36 years though :)

I am pleased with it as a first start to live portraiture. My goal is to free myself up a bit and focus less on shading and layering - and more on proper measurement to achieve a model's unique features and expressions. The woman next to me did the most amazing charcoal sketch - beautiful expression, movement and likeness - with so few lines and subtle shading. Anyway - wanted to share.

Live and Learning

So after dragging my feet all day, I forced myself to pencil sketch the girl's outline.I hate, hate, hate pre-sketching. Yes, it's all part of the process, and yes I will be grateful for it later on.. but this is the least enjoyable part for me. So I did it really fast, and sort of messy.

Live and learn right? Live now, learn.... uh.. later.

Honestly though, for this painting, which will take many weeks, I can always fine tune it later. But now I've (quickly) moved into the color blocking stage. My favorite. Here I can figure out the flow and feeling.

My painting style works like a paint by numbers, horrific sounding but let me explain. I paint in the light tones first, with shadows, then I lay on the carefully picked flesh tones, and fabric tones by sight, methodicaly. First I sculpt it, then I paint it and the light tones act as a guide.

So that's how I work, hope I explained it clearly.

"EDM #16: Draw Your Favorite Tool"

Draw your favorite tool. This one gave me some trouble, couldn't get motivated to do this one. Too many tools to choose from: hammers, pliers, ladders, etc., etc.

Got to thinking about perspectives and how I might be able to sketch one of my Pigma Micros pens in the upright position while it magically draws my hammer, all by itself.

It came out ok. Not sure the shadow does much, but hey, it's just a simple, and a rather fun sketch to do.

Today I returned to my attempts at sketching though now I'm taking a less intimidating direction following some of the exercises in 52 Drawing Labs for Mixed Media Artists by Carla Sonheim. Exercise #6 is draw an image repetitively, loosely, keeping hand and wrist soft and loose. Her example was using a dog, so I imitated her.

The idea was to use a marker (yikes no erasing!) on an index card. I didn't have any but have skads of postcard paper so that's what I used. Except for the couple that look more sheep like than dog like, I'm pleased with the results - and it was fun. I feel successful, which is the point I think.

All the others have been in oil. This is a scene from our front yard (even though the photo is blurry). It's done on a piece of pressboard.

Owyhee Picture Jaspar, Plume Agate (I think), and another type of Jaspar

I picked up some fun new agates and jaspar pieces at a little rock shop next to Hubby's Pizza in downtown Kennewick. He's looking for more visitors, so pop on over there if you love rocks. He has mostly slabs and cuts of agates, jaspars and petrified woods. Not a lot of crystals. I'll get his phone and address for you if you're interested. I just love the picture jaspars. If you look closely, you can find little mountains and landscapes in the color striations. I also think these patterns will show up in my artwork in some form, maybe in a background of a painting or part of an abstract. The shimmery periwinkle blues in the plume agate are stunning. Unfortunately, the photo doesn't do them justice.

My upstairs home studio has been the clutter station for awhile, so I've begun excavating. It's going to take awhile, but it's also exciting to carve out a space to create here. In the meantime, I brought some paints from the downtown studio, but they started to dry out and this is the meager attempt I made to salvage what I could. There's a lesson in there, of course. How can you get vibrant art if your paint is dried out? Being stingy and creating dynamic art don't exactly go together. It was a fun exercise in lifting and keying the painting. I wanted predominant blue tones, but there seems to be a lot of red in this photo.

Happy Sad

Sometimes, I here something, see something so beautiful, that I can't help but get this knot in my stomach. A sweet aching pain, that odd as it feels, I wish would last forever. A happy sad. I don't like to share my feelings with people, but I'm trying hard to remedy that. I want to share my art without obstructions, that includes the emotions that drive me to create. I want to be honest to you all.

This is a light warmth/cold study of my sister. My sister and I are, as juvenile as it sounds, best friends. I trust her with every thought I have, and my new sweater to wear. She is so full of courage and compassion, ready to be an ear to anyone who needs help. Sometimes I can't help but be distant, and she always knows how to make me human again.

This painting is dedicated to her, fitting as she is the subject.

My vision is of soft colors, light that holds her, both cold and warm.

From her rosy hands to the soft billowing skirt around her ankles, I hope it all comes together on the 4 foot by 2 foot canvas.

I want the painting to have that happy sad feeling.

"Some Urban Sketching in Spokane"

While in Spokane yesterday, I had a really brief window to do a bit of sketching of downtown Spokane. The one on top I did while sitting on a concrete flower box, freezing my tush. I think it would have been a good idea to stay with the Pigma Microns for the trees, but hey, what the heck, right? It wasn't difficult to splash paint on this one because it's a very rough sketch, still I worried about ruining it. Ha..

This one was done from inside the food mart at the River Park Square Mall, looking down on Main and Post Streets. The sun was shining so the shadows could have played a part in all this, but I decided to take the sky and blast it with some dark paint. It isn't easy just flopping paint after spending what feels like a considerable amount of time getting the drawing down, so it's a real adventure when you do splash the paint like this.

Haven't blogged for a couple of days but tried to keep drawing. Had busy work week (I'm a Strategic Planner at a Chicago ad agency, so I get to work with some terrifically talented creative people who thankfully understand that incessant doodling during meetings is often a sign of paying more attention, not less..!)

The other great thing about working at ad agencies is that during tough weeks and early evening meetings, the beers, chips and salsa are never too far away.

The bottle is a bit too squat as I overworked it and lost the graceful, slim edge a bit. But it was a fun, relaxed drawing to do while we were all chatting away.

Yet again; I did something, yesterday, that I have wanted to do for a long time. I threw some mugs and when I took them off of the wheel I squished the bottoms. A friend once told me about an antique Chinese pot that was so wet when they glazed it that the bottom where they held it in the glaze bucket was distorted and you could see the finger marks of the glazer. I always like spontanious marks left by the tools and hands. Most Americans are sort of anal about craftsmanship. I think I was a Korean potter in a previous life. Does every one want to go to the AAA meet and greet with me?

Check out 509Art's facebook re AAA's OK for a gathering of local artists at their place, did some pots today, fired one kiln, blew up 8 year olds heart sculpture (bummer) need ot fix clear glaze, it isn't clear, looked at BB King painting, thinking of replacing background again to reflect the marvelous, current, WSU show, applied for the chancellor show, hung stuff in the WSU show, one was a redo of a painting shown in the Hearld at the Art's Council show in the 80's, that would BB, got some info on the Pasco censorship debaucle, Thanks Jim, mixed and screened some clay, graded tests for the art appreciation class, decided I can't offer any additional pottery classes, now I have to tell them, and had a really good time. Oh yeah, bought a salt block for Buz and Sparky.

Joyride, Packing, Concert,

Taking creative license for art today.
Joyride: Scott and I were wide awake 3:something a.m.. "Listen," Scott said. Nothing, no noise outside at all. ahhhhh.... so we got up, dressed and went on an hour long joy ride, the whole world to ourselves. Down back hills roads with the lights off. Into downtown (past DS Watkins and Laura Gable studios), onto the island. Back home at 5a,m for a short nap. Saw maybe a dozen cars - most of them by the highways.
Packing; A friend is moving to Olympia so helped pack and clean at her house.
Concert: Leaving in two minutes to the Camarata Musica concert with my lovely friend, Mary.

"EDM #14: Draw the First Thing You See in the Morning"

The first thing I see when I get up in the morning is the room that extends off our master bedroom. It's where we have our desktop computer sitting atop a door that is resting on two different file cabinets. It makes a huge desktop. Behind the computer is a window that looks east toward the Blue Mountains. The recliner doesn't really face that closet, (thanks to the wonkiness of my sketch) it really faces a small tv. To the right is the hallway leading to the other bedrooms. Where the yellow sign is hanging on the wall is actually another framed image. Behind the red lamp and opposite the computer, behing the wall is an art desk with a bunch of organized chaos on it. That's all for today.
