Our Heroine, falling to desperation, has begun frequenting seamy places contemplating unspeakable things.

    Are you sure it's "seamy" places where she's been frequenting? With those shower curtains, methinks maybe "steamy" would be a more precise descriptor. lol

    I thought the background was a bit back-alley.
    It is most important, particularly when falling on hard times, to find refinement or a good hot shower whenever possible. duh! :)
