Big Enough?

With each concept sketch my whale seems to grow larger. I quite like this one, it 's the first to show the compleate smile.  Tomorrow I'll work on the painting of the sleeping girl, but tonight this will do!

Picnik is Dead, Portland OR is Weird

Okay, there are two things on my mind at the moment.
The first is this, Google is shutting down my FAVORITE photo editing site called picnik. I use this free service EVERY DAY for my art and blog. I have used picnik for many, years and I can't believe this is happening! Powers that be at Google, you horrible little men.. You're on my bad list. Aside from picnik they are shutting down Needlebase, Social Graph API, Urchin and Google Sky Map. I'm honestly worried about what to do when picnik is gone. Any good photo editing sites you know of, please comment.
So aside from that disaster, I do have good news!
Tomorrow I'm boarding a plane destined for Portland Oregon. I was born there and still have friends to visit and of course family to see. Below is a rather romanticized version of my trip.

While on vacation I'll try my hardest to post everyday, but I will be out of reach for 3 days on the Oregon Coast. Unfortunately there is no reliable Internet connection, barbaric I know! ^_^

Portlandia, I'm Coming

Ah, on Saturday I'm boarding a plane to Portland Oregon, the city I was born in.
I adore Portland, it's a city full of passion. Passion for food, passion for art and passion for music. And.. beards, plaid, tattoos, recycling, and "putting birds on stuff". Portlandia, I'm coming, just you wait!
Before I leave I have been working on my Sister painting, or Taste The Rainbow painting. I'm absolutely STOKED about how well it's coming along.

Sleeping in a Floaty-Soft-Place

Here's what I'm thinking.
All of my literary and artistic heroes were early risers and know for working hard all day. I've found that I don't work like that. All my best painting is late at night, I can't stand painting in the "wee morning hours".
Today I tried to imitate Hemingway's vigorous work routine by painting this morning.
It was torture!! I just can't focus, I need to be alone when I paint. Mornings are filled with people running out for work, or hanging out half the day, or lawn guys firing up leaf blowers. Afternoons here are filed with the "lovely" voices of children shrieking in what I can only guess is an epic game of tag. By dinner time my family is back, and it's not until everyone has gone to bed that I feel able to paint, and paint I do.
I guess what I'm saying is that every creative person has their own schedule, a "magic" time of the day. My time is from 9-11 at night roughly. Anyways, this is what I've accomplished tonight.

Not much, but I'll paint more after uploading this. My biggest fear is to lose track of time and forget to post everyday! Thank God it hasn't happened yet! ^_^

Taste The Rainbow

Today I was determined to make progress and have something worth sharing. Next week I'll be traveling so expect lots of "Post-It-Note" art and quick sketches.
Until then though, here's what I'm working on.
The Josie painting, as I've dubbed it, is coming along really well.
Basically, i paint with whatever color happens to be closest to me. Lazy, yes, but also effective in adding interest.

While I painted today I listened
to Wolfmother (think 21st century Van Halen... but better).
Something about crazy 70's inspired rock keeps my painting lose and instinctual. All my best art has been assisted by some form of music.
Whenever painting, I tend to "nest" as seen below.

Live and Learning

So after dragging my feet all day, I forced myself to pencil sketch the girl's outline.I hate, hate, hate pre-sketching. Yes, it's all part of the process, and yes I will be grateful for it later on.. but this is the least enjoyable part for me. So I did it really fast, and sort of messy.

Live and learn right? Live now, learn.... uh..  later.

Honestly though, for this painting, which will take many weeks, I can always fine tune it later. But now I've (quickly) moved into the color blocking stage. My favorite. Here I can figure out the flow and feeling.

My painting style works like a paint by numbers, horrific sounding but let me explain. I paint in the light tones first, with shadows, then I lay on the carefully picked flesh tones, and fabric tones by sight, methodicaly. First I sculpt it, then I paint it and the light tones act as a guide.

So that's how I work, hope I explained it clearly.

Happy Sad

Sometimes, I here something, see something so beautiful, that I can't help but get this knot in my stomach. A sweet aching pain, that odd as it feels, I wish would last forever. A happy sad. I don't like to share my feelings with people, but I'm trying hard to remedy that. I want to share my art without obstructions, that includes the emotions that drive me to create. I want to be honest to you all.

This is a light warmth/cold study of my sister. My sister and I are, as juvenile as it sounds, best friends. I trust her with every thought I have, and my new sweater to wear. She is so full of courage and compassion, ready to be an ear to anyone who needs help. Sometimes I can't help but be distant, and she always knows how to make me human again.

This painting is dedicated to her, fitting as she is the subject.
My vision is of soft colors, light that holds her, both cold and warm.
From her rosy hands to the soft billowing skirt around her ankles, I hope it all comes together on the 4 foot by 2 foot canvas.

I want the painting to have that happy sad feeling.

The Fault In Our Stars, YETI

Ok, So today
my art is dedicated to my FAVORITE author who just released a book!

The author is John Green and the book is The Fault In Our Stars. I adore every one of his books, and my all my friends do too. We've been waiting for this book to come out for so long, I pre-ordered my copy last august. Oh and get this, John Green signed every copy of the first printing because of his devoted fans. Yup, all 130,000 of the first printing. Everyone has his signature, 5% have an extra drawing of a fish inside (sort of an inside joke from his YouTube channel) and less than 3% have drawings of a yeti inside. Again, another joke from his channel. well...

I GOT A YETI DRAWING.

I won the lottery,
life is complete.

Me and Johns signature and the Yeti (drawn by his wife).

Miss Sarah's Peculiar Drawing

Today I bought the book Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, and I adore it! It's a New York Times Best Seller, ands full of clever writing.
I'm enjoying it so much, that I decided to draw the character on the book cover.
And, yes, she is floating.
How peculiar..

Art Nouveau Spire

Today I did work on my Dragon sculpture, but I'm still in the boring cardboard stage.. so.. I'm sharing this. It's a tall Art Nouveau/Gothic Church Spire.
It came directly from my imagination.

Sleeper

I drew out some concept art for my next paint since Space Man is almost finished.
It's going to be centered around a sleeping female figure. I used a pencil to sketch out her form in various posses, and I think I've picked my favorite.

Monet's Work Ethic Applied, Sort Of

After so much time spent on
one painting, I'm glad to find that I'm not sick of Space Men as subjects.
I remember when I was 5 learning about Monet's Water Lillies for the first time. I used to think "Doesn't he get board painting the same thing over and over again?". I was to little to begin to understand the powerful fixation between subject and execution. I have to keep working, keep adding layers, keep adjusting, keep improving, keep at it, on, and on until it lines up with the vision in my mind. I can be my biggest fan but I can also be my biggest critic. So now I understand Monet a little more. Of course this all leads to the fact that the Space Man isn't finished yet, but with each day I get closer.

Oh, and these photographs never do my paintings justice.

Furry Pink Mustache

Whew! I almost forgot to do a post today *gasp* after an evening of fun playing Ultimate Frisbee.
..and only 8 days into my resolution to post and make art everyday of the year!
Good thing I painted this furry old grandpa early in the day.
I'm fond of his pink mustache.

Water color, paper & an ultra fine Sharpie were used to make this.
Oh.. and if any of you were waiting on more pictures of my Dragon sculpture or Astronaut painting, tomorrow I'm working on both. Friday-Sunday I like to do little things.. it was the weekend!!

Curly Top & My Art In a Gallery!!

Today I went back to the Dallas Texas Museum of Art.
I saw Monets, Manets, Van Goghs, Renoirs, Matises, Edward Burn-Jones paintings, Henry Margarets, Picasos, and so much more! I'm so thankful that I now live in a city with such treasures.
After I finally collapsed in front of my fireside after a day of museum walking, I sketched this girl. I used a regular #2 pencil.

Today was also a big day aside from the museum.
I brought my huge 3'x3' painting of a girl (link to her Here) to a winery called Times Ten Cellars in Dallas to see If they were interested in showcasing it for sale. Well, to be perfectly honest, they loved it!
It's now hanging inside, up for sale!
Drop by if you're in the area :)

Dragon Goggles

Well, here is my concept art for the Dragon's coloring.
I'm especially proud of the goggle-like patterning around his eyes, and the flag like appendages on his head make me smile. He literally can feel the wind in his flaggy-things.

More to come on this many colored beasty, and who knows this might not be the final design.
However, at the moment I'm quiet happy with it.

Zelda Inspired Art

I've found wire for my Paper Mache Dragon wings!!
I've also covered the body and head. More exoskeleton must be made on the wings before I begin to paper mache them.

Now, since I'm halfway finished the body I had better plan a color pallet.
Hmm.. I'm considering a Pacific Coast Native American-ish combined with the legend of Zelda Wind Waker-ish style.

sort of like this (from Zelda)

 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Concept Art

I'll have to work on some small paintings in order to figure out exactly what I want.
More to come!

I'm Sick, Post It Note Art

This is me. I was up all night being sick.
This is also my art for the day because I still don't feel great.

This was me trying to make art earlier today.
Post-It notes were all I could manage.

What I did do all day, was watch YouTube.
But not for long.. the screen made me dizzy.

..And this is what I hope to do later tonight.

Blah. I hope I feel better tomorrow.

Whale of a Friend

Today
I ran into a wall trying to figure out how to support the paper mache dragon wings.
I have no wire in the house..

So while I was thumping my head against the wall wondering if tooth picks could work, I thought of this..

I was wishing for a friend (preferably with large amounts of wire to spare) who could help me out.
Then I started thinking of how gentle whales are, what a great friend a whale would be.. Strong, sweet, my goodness they even sing! Hmm, the perfect buddy. So I thought about a whale helping out a fishing boat by carrying them into a safe harbor.

So yeah, still figuring out the wing problem, but at least I have my next project lined up.
