Dominoes and Doodles

I added an image to my Jan 17th post.  The original doodle that turned into Floodwaters brooch.

Yesterday was the first day in my studio since the weather turned cold.  Good to be in the studio and I LOVE working with the old dominoes for making jewelry!  These aren't complete - just dinking around with ideas.

The far left is a man brooch. I plan to embed the heart halfway down into the ebony and create a 'rail' so the silver piece can slide up and down about a 1/2".  Right now its in the down position as if the "armor" is protecting his nethers or it can slide up partially covering and protecting the heart.  Seems ripe with symbolism.
I'm pretty intimidated about creating the rails but will figure something out.

The pink stained one in the center failed in that the black ink bled somewhat through the porous bone. I've been wanting to try silver inlay so might give that a go on the fleur de lis(ish) part.

The square on the right is very rough yet.  The ebony surrounds a cast-off from years ago -a cash register key cap filled with fresh water pearls w/a zirconium crystal embedded on the top.  I absolutely love the diverse twists and turns these dominoes take.

I got out to the studio again today but pretty much stared at and  touched things.  Simply could not engage.   ho hum

I came across this doodle while looking for the earlier Floodwaters one.  Always thought it'd be a sweet little piece to make.

Clearly I've been a total slacker here!

Plenty of valid excuses but nothing truly preventing me if I were committed. Like I said..., *slacker*.

I don't consider myself much of a drawer but I can do passable when I try.  At least enough for my basic needs.  Some of my favorite jewelry pieces are from random sketchbook doodles.
So, that's my plan when I get off the computer.  I will draw.

I posted the brooches here earlier with the Dominos Jewelry - now including the initiating doodle.  I plan to make the single heart on a stick one as well.  Maybe call it The Red Balloon?   :)

I'll find the original doodle for the one below tomorrow when I brave my studio..."Baby it's cold outside!"  I doodled it years before but built it during the time of the New Orleans flood so it's titled Flood Waters.  I'm eager to find the original doodle because I think I stayed pretty true to the sketch.  Tomorrow - I will post something totally new - I promise!

Sketch is tough to see but pretty much pulled it off!

Domino Jewelry

My new fascination  - turning vintage dominoes into jewelry.  These are my first study pieces.  I try to make the backs interesting too, so it's like a wee secret for the wearer.

These are part of January Allied Arts show.   I am honored to have been selected for the Szulinski Award at Allied Arts and doubly delighted to be sharing the space with the Desert Fiber Arts show.

Weavings at Allied Arts

The Desert Fiber Arts show at Allied Arts, Richland, is one of my favorite shows.  So much lusciousness. I love seeing Agent Carter again, Patti, and Schweitzer is absolutely breathtaking.

I have been desperate to pick up my brushes and do something, anything since Thanksgiving.  I believe I have cooked the last meal for the holiday season last night! Phew!  Now that family and friends have retreated for the moment I am back in my studio but with just enough creative energy to play with little bits of color on little bits of paper.  I am glad even this meager display of unction was a result of my resolve encouraged and supported by this page and this yearly activity that may or may not keep me going every day but definitely gets my butt in gear again for the new year.  I have lots of paintings to complete from a summer of plein air attempts.  So most likely that will be my first main focus.  For now though I will get my creative spirit re- lit by playing with water and color.

Bobi,
Thank you, for the Art a Day blog opportunity, Patti Kirch.

I did a painting of a chicken today.  This is the Chinese year of the rooster as was the year I was born. I wished every on a Happy Clucking New Year.  Wish I could post the picture.  It is on my facebook.

Happy New Year

I love that the calendar rolls around eventually and gives us another chance to renew all those good intentions. Looking forward to seeing all of your beautiful works and becoming inspired. - Tracy
