How do you know if it's art?

My latest projects involve going and buying up what could most politely be called "vintage costume jewelry," cleaning it, stripping plating off of it in some cases, soldering earring posts, or pendant bails onto them, and adding chains and beads and so on, sometimes re-plating, to make newish jewelry. But is it art? They are not high-end pieces. The cost of materials is low. I think maybe it won't be long before these pieces appear in the same sorts of places where I bought them to begin with. So I don't know.

My profile picture is one of my "up-cycled" pieces. I have always loved old bits of jewelry and pins, and so on, even if they aren't made of precious metals or gems. I don't like the flashy pieces with lots of rhinestones. I like the bits and components of old jewelry that have stood the test of time and wear, and just need a bit of love and creativity to be wearable again.

So, is it really art?

Hmmm. I believe if you crafted it with your own hands, it is indeed your art. I would love to see an image or two...It sounds very intriguing, and would be something I would buy and lovingly wear.

I'll be posting photos. Also, I'll be taking some of the pieces to the Kennewick Art Walk on Thursday night. I'll be at You & I Framing. I've decided that this month for jewelry projects that I'll focus strictly on up-cycled jewelry. Heaven knows I have enough old bits and pieces to play with.

I wonder how many thousands of years that question has been bandied about. There is art I need someone to help me appreciate and there are simple, modest creations that move me to tears I can't explain. There is the funky and marvelous how-do-people-think-like-that? creations and the heart stirring creations from a gifted or seasoned maker. I'm pretty sure there isn't a boundary line of art/not-art but I do know if we encourage, trust, honor and allow creative expression magic happens. Things flourish in an environment of cherishing.

That's the best part about art - it's such an all-encompassing and inclusive word. Reworked, reimagined pieces can sometimes stretch the imagination more than starting from scratch with newly minted pieces. Can't wait to see the photos!

Finished a piece just now. Pendant. I really need to dig up some chemicals for patinas besides liver of sulfur. Copper and bronze get some lovely effects.
